Chapter Eleven

The precinct wasn’t too far from the bar, but it was far enough that two taxis were required, so I didn’t eat into my time by walking. It wasn’t like we could vamp-speed through the city with Kendra and Luke and about a thousand-night owls out for a Tuesday night on the town.

The Charing Cross police station was four stories of smooth white facade with windows built onto a corner where the roads narrowed to a point. We walked in the front door, and I advanced to the desk like I was on official business. I had practice at this point from all my skips. My timid days of fearing the police had long since faded. They were people. Just like I was, well, just like I’d been once. Some were good. Some were bad. All were compellable and edible.

The officer behind the desk smiled at me. He was charming in his black uniform and position of power. Not as devilishly handsome as Luci, or as strikingly gorgeous as Jax, but he wasn’t wearing a ring, so I bet he got his fair share of action.

“Hello,” I said with a professional smile, meeting his gaze.

“‘Allo, Miss.” His up and down appraisal of me only confirmed what I already thought. This guy was a player. His accent and voice were a bit Pierce Brosnan. I had a thing for accents.

“Hi. My name is…” Real or not? “Charlotte Dupre. I’m a bounty hunter in the United States. I have traced one of my skips right here to the UK, to London.” Oh Lord. Why had I mentioned that? “Anyway, I was hoping I could see the detective who is investigating a series of murders here in London.” He eyed me, met my gaze, and I held onto his. “I need to see the detective. You’re going to get me the detective.”

He blinked, and his mouth thinned. “I don’t think so, Velma.”

Velma? From Scooby Doo? Most certainly not. I was about twenty years older and had way better hair—if she was converted from cartoon world to real people land. What the hell?

Bah! I need more practice with compelling people.

Paige stepped forward. “Officer…” She leaned in, let him get a whiff of her perfume then pulled back. “Dunwiddy.” She smiled, and I could’ve sworn I saw her push her boobs up. Damn she was good.

But then she stood at her full height, put her finger under his chin and forced him to look up at her. “Bring us to the detective in charge of the murders.”

He smiled like they’d shared an inside joke, and his cheeks flushed as he stood and gazed at Paige. I didn’t know how her powers of persuasion worked, but men who looked at women like that were either very hopeful they were going to get to know one another better, or they already knew. That was the power of Paige.

“CI Felber, these folks wanted to talk to you.” Obviously, we were catching him on his way out. He had a briefcase in one hand and an umbrella in the other.
